Pay as
you go mobile phones
The
networks first introduced Pay As You Go phones in the 1990's
which opened the door for many people to get their first mobile
phone. They had a big part to play in the explosive growth
in mobile phone ownership in the UK. In 2001 the networks
stopped subsidising the cost of Pay As You Go phones making
them more expensive.
These
days the actual cost of buying a Pay As You Go phone can be
quite expensive compared with a Pay Monthly phones where most
of the popular phones are available for free on most networks,
and some top-of-the-range phones which are very expensive
as Pay As You Go phones are relatively cheap when purchased
on a contract. This
is because the networks are focusing their subsidies more
on "higher value" customers. Pay Monthly phones also often
come with various special deals such as free minutes each
month, free line rental for a fixed period, free text messages
etc.
You
are better off buying a Pay Monthly phone, unless:
- You
are under 18
- You
have a poor credit rating
- You
don't intend to use the phone very much.
- You
want to spend as little as possible on a phone, and intend
to keep the same phone for more than 2 years.
When you buy a Pay Monthly phone, you are only tied to a 12
month contract, and are free to cancel after 12 months, or
upgrade to another phone or switch network.
